Basidiomycetes, order Matsutake, family Russulaceae. Also called Dokubenitake or Benishimeji. Grows in summer and autumn on the ground beneath broadleaf or coniferous forests. The cap is round and mountain-shaped and later opens and becomes flat. It is generally a beautiful crimson, sometimes reddish crimson or white, and measures 2-11cm in diameter. The stalk is 0.5-3cm thick, 2-6cm long, white and cylindrical. It is said to be poisonous, but this is doubtful. It is also found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia Minor. 担子菌類マツタケ目ベニタケ科。ドクベニタケあるいはベニシメジともいう。夏秋に,広葉樹林または針葉樹林下の地上に生える。傘は丸山形でのちに開いて平らになる。概して美しい紅色,ときに帯赤紅色または白色で径2~11cmとなる。柄は太さ 0.5~3cm,長さは2~6cm,白色で円筒形。毒性があるというが疑わしい。北海道,本州,九州,ヨーロッパ,北アメリカ,オーストラリア,小アジア地方にも分布している。
