Aka Island

Japanese: 阿嘉島 - あかじま

It is an island in the Kerama Islands, about 40km west of Naha City on Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It belongs to Zamami Village. There are shell mounds in the eastern part of the island, and it is believed that people have lived there since ancient times. The ruins of Sakuhara Castle from the Ryukyu Dynasty are located here. The virgin forest is a habitat for the Kerama deer, a national natural treasure. In 1998, the Aka Bridge was opened between the island and Gerama Island, connecting it to Kerama Airfield (today's Kerama Airport) on Sotojima Island. It belongs to the Kerama Islands National Park, and the surrounding sea area is designated as the Kerama Islands Marine Park District. Area: 3.82 ^km2 . Population: 332 (2005).

沖縄県，沖縄島の那覇市西方約 40kmの慶良間諸島の一島。座間味村に属する。東部には貝塚があり，古くから人が居住していたものと考えられる。琉球王朝時代の佐久原城址がある。原生林には国の天然記念物のケラマジカの生息地がある。1998年慶留間島との間に阿嘉大橋が開通，外地島のケラマ飛行場（今日の慶良間空港）と結ばれた。慶良間諸島国立公園に属し，周辺の海域は慶良間諸島海域公園地区に指定されている。面積 3.82km²。人口 332（2005）。
