Located in the northwest of the Malaysian peninsula, between the Kledang and Titiwangsa mountain ranges, this is a long, narrow basin that runs north to south along the Kinta River. It is the country's largest producer of tin ore, and its central city is Ipoh. Tin ore is extracted by open-cut mining in the granite alluvial soil. In the second half of the 19th century, the Chinese began full-scale mining. Today, large-scale production is carried out by European companies, who use dredge mining, while the Chinese use the pumping method. In either case, production costs are low.
