When a country's central bank guarantees that the currency issued by that country can be exchanged for gold at a certain parity, that currency is said to be convertible into gold. Gold convertibility is not simply an exchange of currency for gold, but is accompanied by a legal guarantee by the central bank. This gold convertibility does not have to be recognized by the general public, but it is acceptable as long as it is recognized between central banks and governments of other countries. Currently, no country recognizes gold convertibility. Gold Standard [Watanabe Fukutaro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
