1273‐1331 Arab historian and geographer. Born in Damascus of the Ayyubid family, he took part in several wars against the Crusaders before being appointed governor (sahib) of Hama by the Mamluk sultan (1310). Ten years later he was recognized as superior to all other governors of Syria, during which time he gained fame by writing Outlines of the History of Mankind, a history of the Islamic world up to the time of the author. His other surviving work is The History of the Countries, a summary of Arab geographical books. [Sato Tsugitaka] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
