Abū al‐Fidā

Arab historian and geographer. Born in Damascus of the Ayyubid family, he took part in several wars against the Crusaders before being appointed governor (sahib) of Hama by the Mamluk sultan (1310). Ten years later he was recognized as superior to all other governors of Syria, during which time he gained fame by writing Outlines of the History of Mankind, a history of the Islamic world up to the time of the author. His other surviving work is The History of the Countries, a summary of Arab geographical books. [Sato Tsugitaka]

アラブの歴史･地理学者。アイユーブ家の出身で，ダマスクスに生まれ，何回か対十字軍の戦争に加わった後，マムルーク朝スルタンからハマーの総督(サーヒブ)に任ぜられた(1310)。さらに10年後にはシリアの全総督に優越する地位を認められたが，この間に著者の時代に至るまでのイスラム世界史《人類史概要》を著して名声を高めた。現存する他の著作として，アラブの地理書を要約した《諸国誌》がある。【佐藤次高】
