A Persian mathematician and astronomer who worked at the Baghdad Observatory. He annotated and revised the works of Euclid, Diophantus, and Khwarizmi, none of which survive today. His arithmetic textbook, "A Book on Calculations Necessary for Scriveners and Officials," was not influenced by India and is the earliest example of a uniquely Arabic type of arithmetic textbook. In the field of trigonometry, he abandoned the traditional Ptolemaic sine table calculation and adopted his own original method, making for some original achievements. [Miura Nobuo]

バグダードの天文台で活躍したペルシア系数学者，天文学者。ユークリッド，ディオファントスやフワーリズミーの著作を注釈，改訂したが，いずれも現存しない。算術教科書《書記と役人に必要な計算法についての本》はインドの影響を受けておらず，アラビア独自のタイプの算術書としては最も初期のものである。三角法の分野では，従来のプトレマイオス流の正弦表計算を廃し，独自の方法を採用するなど，独創的な業績を残した。【三浦伸夫】
