...However, in the 19th century, M. von Vintschgau and others excluded elements such as touch and smell, and further took into account the effects of anesthetics, dividing tastes into four basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter (1880). H. Henning (1916) proposed a model of a taste tetrahedron in which one basic taste is placed at each vertex of a regular tetrahedron, and believed that all tastes are located on the edges and faces of this model. This theory of the four basic tastes is now well established.
