Kongobu-ji Temple

Located in Koyasan, Koya-cho, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture, this temple is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. It was founded by Kukai in 816 (Kōnin 7). The temple's name was given by Kukai in reference to the Kongobu-rōkaku Yugayugikyō (Kongōbu-rōkaku Yogagyōgikyō), and was also a general name for the entire mountain range of Koyasan. In the past, it was also called Seigan-ji. In 1590 (Tenshō 18), with the assistance of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Mokujiki Ogo rebuilt Seigan-ji and built Kosan-ji to its left. In 1869 (Meiji 2), the two temples were merged and renamed Kongōbu-ji. The main hall was rebuilt in 1863 (Bunkyu 3) and is 30 bays from east to west and 35 bays from north to south. The sliding doors of the Great Hall and Plum Room are painted by Kano Tanyu, while the Willow Room is a reproduction of the room where Toyotomi Hidetsugu committed suicide and features a willow sliding door painting by Kano Tansai. Buildings attached to the main hall include the inner hall, new annex, annex, sutra storehouse, bell tower, imperial envoy gate, upper gate, lower gate, Shinzen Hall, goma hall, Ajikan Dojo, and the Koyasan Shingon sect office. The inner hall and annex were built in 1934 (Showa 9), and the new annex in 1983 (Showa 58). The 6 o'clock bell was donated by Fukushima Masanori in 1618 (Genwa 4). The bell tower was built in 1835 (Tenpo 6). The Daishi Kyokai headquarters building was built in 1925 (Taisho 14) and expanded in 1983. National treasures and important cultural properties owned by Kongobu-ji Temple are kept in the Koyasan Reihokan Museum.
