...He later wrote over ten screenplays, including The Boy Detectives (1931) and The Blonde Dream (1932), but in 1933, when Hitler came to power, he fled to Paris because he was Jewish, and there he co-directed with Al Eswaye the Bad Seed (1933), starring Daniel Darrieux. In 1934, he traveled via Mexico to the United States (his mother and other family members who were left behind are said to have died in concentration camps). In Hollywood, he lived in poverty with actor Peter Lorre (1904-1964), who was known for his role in Fritz Lang's M, but in 1938 he began collaborating with Charles Brackett (1892-1969) to write screenplays for such sophisticated comedies as Mitchell Reisen's Midnight (1939), Ernst Lubitsch's The Eighth Wife (1938) and Ninotchka (1939), and Howard Hawks' Ball of Fire (1941). They became known as one of Hollywood's finest duos, writing screenplays for such sophisticated comedies as screwball comedies, which often had crazy themes such as reversing the roles of men and women. From 1942 onwards, he worked as a producer, director and screenwriter, producing the war thriller Secret of the Desert (1943), the crime melodrama Midnight Confession (1944), known as the first masterpiece of film noir, and The Lost Weekend (1945), said to be the first American film to directly depict alcoholism, for which he won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

…その後，《少年探偵団》(1931)，《ブロンドの夢》(1932)など10本余りの脚本を書くが，ヒトラーが政権を握った1933年，ユダヤ人であるためパリにのがれ，そこでダニエル･ダリュー主演の《悪い種子Mauvaise Graine》(1933)をアル･エスウェーと共同監督し，34年に，メキシコをへてアメリカに渡った(あとに残された母や家族は強制収容所で死亡したという)。　ハリウッドではフリッツ･ラング監督の《M》で知られた俳優ピーター･ローレPeter Lorre(1904‐64)のところに転がり込んで貧窮の生活を送るが，38年からチャールズ･ブラケットCharles Brackett(1892‐1969)と脚本の共同執筆を始め，ミッチェル･ライゼン監督の《ミッドナイト》(1939)，エルンスト･ルビッチ監督の《青髯八人目の妻》(1938)，《ニノチカ》(1939)，ハワード･ホークス監督の《教授と美女Ball of Fire》(1941)など，洗練された喜劇(男と女の地位の逆転などクレージーな主題のものが多かったので，〈スクリューボール･コメディ〉などと呼ばれた)の脚本を書いてハリウッド随一のコンビとうたわれた。42年からは製作者，監督，脚本家の三役を兼ねて，戦争スリラー《熱砂の秘密》(1943)，〈フィルム･ノワール〉の最初の傑作として知られる犯罪メロドラマ《深夜の告白》(1944)をつくり，そしてそれにつづくアメリカ映画史上初めてアルコール中毒を正面切って描いたといわれる《失われた週末》(1945)でアカデミー作品･監督･脚本賞を受賞した。…
