A city located in the northern part of Chita Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture, facing Nagoya Port. In 1969, the towns of Ueno and Yokosuka merged to form a city. It borders Nagoya City to the south. Reclamation began in 1960, and the largest steel and heavy chemical industry in the Chubu region moved in, forming part of the southern Nagoya coastal industrial area, with a manufacturing shipment value of approximately 900 billion yen (2001). The Chita Hills have been rapidly developed into residential areas. The Meitetsu Kowa Line and Tokoname Line run through the city. 43.43 km2 . Population 107,690 (2010). 愛知県知多半島の北部,名古屋港に面する市。1969年,上野,横須賀の2町が合体して市制改称。名古屋市の南に接する。1960年から埋立が進み,中部圏最大の製鉄および重化学工業が進出して,名古屋南部臨海工業地域の一環をなし,約9000億円(2001)の製造品出荷額を上げている。知多丘陵部は住宅地化が著しい。名鉄河和(こうわ)線・常滑(とこなめ)線が通じる。43.43km2。10万7690人(2010)。
