Phokion (English spelling)
[Born] Around 402 B.C.
[Died] 318 BCE
Ancient Greek Athenian general and politician. He was a political opponent of Demosthenes and Hypereides, and supported Eubulus and Aeschines. He was a disciple of the philosopher Plato and a close friend of Xenocrates. He fought in many battles and was elected general (strategos) 45 times. He worked hard to negotiate peace with Macedonia, and after the defeat in the Lamian War, when democracy was restricted, he became the de facto ruler of Athens and, together with Demades, supported Macedonian control of Athens. In 319 BC, he failed to prevent the Macedonian occupation of Piraeus, and was executed the following year when democracy was restored. However, Athens soon decided to give him a public funeral and erected a statue for him. Plutarch's Life of Phocion
