Katipunans (English spelling)

Japanese: カティプーナン（英語表記）Catipunans

The nickname of the secret society that was the basis of the Philippine Revolution. Its official name is "The Noblest and Most Honorable Society of the Sons of the People." In the Philippines, reform movements against Spanish colonial rule began in the mid-19th century, and in the 1880s, a "propaganda movement" led by Rizal and del Pilar was developed. However, these moderate reform movements were unable to rectify Spanish oppression, so on July 7, 1892, the Katipunan, which aimed for armed revolution, was formed in Tondo, a downtown area of Manila.

フィリピン革命の母体となった秘密結社の通称。正式名称は〈人民の息子らの最も気高く，最も尊敬すべき結社〉である。フィリピンでは19世紀中ごろからスペインの植民地支配に対する改革運動が起こり，1880年代にはリサールやデル･ピラールに指導された〈プロパガンダ運動〉が展開された。しかし，それらの穏健な改革運動ではスペインの圧政を正すことができなかったので，92年7月7日，武力革命をめざすカティプーナンがマニラの下町トンドで結成された。
