A representative shipbuilding company since the early days of the private shipbuilding industry, it began with a shipyard in Tsukiji, Tokyo, established by Kawasaki Shozo in 1878, and expanded after receiving the lease (later sold off) of the government-run Hyogo Shipyard in 1886. It was established as a joint-stock company in 1896, with Matsukata Kojiro as its first president. It is the parent company of the Kawasaki Group, which was formed by separating Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Kawasaki Steel. In 1969, it merged with Kawasaki Sharyo and Kawasaki Aircraft to become a comprehensive heavy machinery manufacturer.
