A city in eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Ontario, at the outlet of the St. Lawrence River. The climate is mild, with an average temperature of -8°C in January, 21°C in July, and an average annual precipitation of 800mm. It was originally an Indian settlement called Cataraqui, but was founded in 1673 by Governor Frontenac of New France. It was an important base for fur trading and defense until it was destroyed by the British in 1758. In 1783, Loyalists settled there and named it Kingston. It later became an important naval base on Lake Ontario. From 1841 to 1844, it was the capital of the United Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada. Port facilities include an inner and outer harbor, grain elevators, shipyards, salvage facilities, and dry docks. The main industries are alumina, diesel locomotives, engines, mining equipment, synthetic rubber, textiles, batteries, leather products, and ceramics. There are also many military-related higher education institutions. Many of the city's buildings are made of limestone, including Queen's University (1841), St. George's Cathedral, and St. Mary's Cathedral. Population: 123,363 (2011).
