Iwafune

Japanese: 岩船 - いわふね

It is a district of Murakame city in northern Niigata prefecture. It is an old fishing port on the Japan Sea coast and also serves as a base for travel to Awashima. The port is at the mouth of the Ishikawa River, which drains the old Iwafunegatawa lagoon at the northern end of the Kambara Sand Dunes, and in the early modern period it flourished as a port of call on the Matsumae route. There is also a monument marking the site of the Iwafune Fortress, and there is the Iwafune Shrine, which is listed in the Shikinaikan, and the Iwafune Festival is famous. The Iwafune Bunka Museum, which was located in the grounds of Shojoji Temple and exhibits the ancient culture of this region, now has its collection on display at the Murakami History Museum.

Iwafune Festival
This is the annual festival of Ishifune Shrine in Iwafune, a port town in the southwest of Murakami City. It is held every year on October 19th to pray for safety at sea, good catches, and prosperous business. Accompanied by kiyari songs, a float carrying a boat called "Ofunesama" leads the parade through the town, followed by portable shrines and floats pulled from each neighborhood. 新潟県北部、村上市の一地区。日本海岸にある旧漁港で、粟島(あわしま)への渡航基地でもある。港は蒲原(かんばら)砂丘の北端にあたる旧岩船潟の排水河川である石川の河口港で、近世は松前航路の寄港地としても栄えた。また、磐舟柵(いわふねのき)跡の碑も残り、式内社石船(いわふね)神社があり岩船大祭は有名。諸上(しょじょう)寺の境内にあったこの地方の古文化を展示する磐舟文華(ぶんか)博物館の収蔵品は、現在は村上歴史博物館に展示されている。
