This refers to the obi attached to the mo (skirt) in the Edo period and the obi that women tied from the chest to the back when visiting shrines and temples in the Heian period. (1) In the Heian period, the mo came to be worn formally at the back of the garment, and the strings were decorated and became something like a hikigoshi (a traditional Japanese waistband). However, after the Kamakura period, the mo was no longer used in peacetime, and the way it was worn also changed. In the Edo period, the mo came to be worn with embroidery made from the same material as the karaginu (traditional Chinese garment), or with a sash decorated with threads attached to the back of the mo, which was then hung over the chest over the shoulders, and this was called the mo no sash.
