French film director. Swiss nationality. Originally a critic for the film magazine Cahiers du Cinema. His first feature film, Breathless (1959), featured a fresh style of improvisation and bold editing, and together with Francis Truffaut he led the Nouvelle Vague. He subsequently produced a succession of controversial works, including A Woman and a Man (1962), Pierrot le Fou (1965), A Few Things I Know About Her (1966), Weekend (1967), A Chinese Woman (1967), and One Plus One (1968), becoming the most important filmmaker of the 1960s. After the May 1968 revolution, he turned to collective film and formed the Dziga Vertov Collective to produce works that fundamentally questioned the relationship between politics and film. He later moved to Switzerland and established a studio called Sonimage, a portmanteau of the words "sound" and "image," where he began working on experimental films. In the 1980s, he produced "Passion" (1982) and "A Woman Called Carmen" (1983, Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival), which was described as a "return to commercial film." He continued to produce works that reexamined film and film history with each production, such as "Godard's History of Cinema" (1989), "Nouvelle Vague" (1990), "Godard's New Germany Year Zero" (1991), "Godard's Farewell" (1993), "JLG/JLG" (1994), and "Forever Mozart" (1996).

フランスの映画監督。スイス国籍。映画雑誌《カイエ・デュ・シネマ》の批評家出身。長編第１作《勝手にしやがれ》（1959年）は即興演出，大胆な編集など新鮮な作風で，F.トリュフォーらとともにヌーベル・バーグの先頭に立った。以降《女と男のいる舗道》（1962年），《気狂いピエロ》（1965年），《彼女について私が知っている二，三の事柄》（1966年），《ウィークエンド》（1967年），《中国女》（1967年），《ワン・プラス・ワン》（1968年）など，次々と問題作を発表し，1960年代のもっとも重要な映画作家となる。1968年の５月革命以降は〈集団映画〉を志向し，〈ジガ・ベルトフ集団〉を結成して政治と映画の関係を根底から問う作品を製作。のち，スイスに移り，〈音〉と〈映像〉を組み合わせた造語からなる〈ソニマージュ〉というスタジオを作って実験的作品を手がける。1980年代に入ってからは《パッション》（1982年），《カルメンという名の女》（1983年，カンヌ映画祭グランプリ）を製作し，〈商業映画への帰還〉と評された。その後も《ゴダールの映画史》（1989年），《ヌーベルバーグ》（1990年），《ゴダールの新ドイツ零年》（1991年），《ゴダールの決別》（1993年），《JLG/JLG》（1994年），《フォーエバー・モーツァルト》（1996年）など，１作ごとに映画と映画史を問い直す作品を精力的に発表している。
