Ferdinand Brunot

French grammarian. Born in Saint-Dié in Lorraine, he studied at the École Normale as a student under Gaston Paris, A. Darmesteter, and Petit de Julville at the École Supérieure. At the age of 22, he passed the Qualification Examination for Higher Education and became a lecturer at the University of Lyon, where he was favored by French language scholar Professor Léon Cléda. In 1891, he submitted his doctoral thesis, The Doctrine of Malherbe, which became a classic work, and revealed the turning point of the establishment of classical French in the 17th century. He was appointed professor at the University of Paris as the successor to Petit de Julville.

フランスの文法学者。ロレーヌ地方のサン･ディエ市に生まれ，エコール･ノルマルの生徒としてガストン･パリス，A.ダルメステテール，プティ･ド･ジュルビルらの指導を高等実習学院で受けた。22歳で高等教員資格試験に合格，リヨン大学講師となりフランス語学者レオン･クレダ教授の知遇を受けた。1891年古典的名著となった博士論文《マレルブのドクトリン》を提出，17世紀の古典フランス語成立の契機を明らかにし，プティ･ド･ジュルビルの後任としてパリ大学教授に任命された。
