1860‐1938 French grammarian. Born in Saint-Dié in Lorraine, he studied at the École Normale as a student under Gaston Paris, A. Darmesteter, and Petit de Julville at the École Supérieure. At the age of 22, he passed the Qualification Examination for Higher Education and became a lecturer at the University of Lyon, where he was favored by French language scholar Professor Léon Cléda. In 1891, he submitted his doctoral thesis, The Doctrine of Malherbe, which became a classic work, and revealed the turning point of the establishment of classical French in the 17th century.
