There is a large-scale magnetic field that runs in a spiral shape through the entire Galaxy, and an irregular magnetic field frozen in the turbulent interstellar gas. The large-scale magnetic field runs along the Cygnus arm in the direction of 80° galactic longitude and 0° galactic latitude near the Sun, with a strength of 3× ^10-6 Gauss. The direction of the magnetic field lines reverses between adjacent spiral arms, and when viewed as a whole Galaxy, the magnetic field lines form a spiral shape with magnetic field lines flowing in from one arm and out from the other arm. The irregular magnetic field component is thought to be in a turbulent state with a scale of about 300 light years, and its strength is also about 3× ^10-6 Gauss.

銀河系全体を渦状につらぬく大きなスケールの磁場と，乱流状態にある星間ガスに凍結した不規則な磁場がある。大きなスケールの磁場は太陽付近でははくちょう座腕にそって銀経80゜，銀緯0゜の方向に走っており，強さは3×10^－6ガウス。磁力線の向きは隣どうしの渦状腕で反転しており，銀河系全体でみると，磁力線が1本の腕から流れこみ，他方の腕から流れ出すような渦巻形をしている。不規則な磁場成分はスケール300光年くらいの乱流状態にあると考えられ，強さはやはり3×10^－6ガウス程度。
