Garnierite (garnierite)

Japanese: ケイニッケル鉱(珪ニッケル鉱) - けいニッケルこう（英語表記）garnierite

A hydrous nickel-magnesium silicate mineral, a member of the serpentine group. Its chemical composition can be expressed by the formula H ₂ (Ni,Mg)SiO ₄ ･ n H ₂ O, but the ratio of nickel to magnesium and the amount of water vary greatly. It is generally amorphous, but crystallized forms are considered to be monoclinic. It is usually found in an earthy or kidney-shaped form. It has a specific gravity of 2.2 to 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 2 to 3, and a green to white color with a dull luster. It appears green under a microscope. It is a secondary mineral formed by the alteration of nickeliferous peridotite.

含水ニッケル，マグネシウムケイ酸塩鉱物で蛇紋石族の一種。化学成分はH₂(Ni,Mg)SiO₄･nH₂Oという式で表せるが，ニッケルとマグネシウムの割合，および水の量が大きく変化する。一般に非晶質だが結晶しているものは単斜晶系と考えられている。ふつうは土状ないし腎臓状を呈して産する。比重2.2～2.8，モース硬度2～3，色は緑色ないし白色で鈍い光沢を示す。顕微鏡下では緑色。含ニッケルカンラン岩の変質によって生ずる二次的鉱物である。
