In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki myths, this is the place where gods live, and also the underworld where centipedes, snakes, bees, and mice live. It is also called Ne no Katasukuni. The meaning of "ne" is origin or earth (a variation of "na"), and it is used in conjunction with the land of haha (meaning deceased mother), and the border with the earth is called Yomotsu Hirasaka. It is also called Kyokuto no Nekuni, which gives the impression of some connection to Yominokuni or Tokoyo no Kuni. It is important to note that Susanoo-no-Mikoto went to this world to become its ruler, tested Okuninushi-no-Mikoto when he visited, and finally issued an edict ordering him to become the king of Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni, in that it shows that this other world was the origin of earthly religious customs. Furthermore, the references to the land of the roots in relation to sin and evil spirits in the prayers for the Great Purification Ceremony on the last day of June and the Michi-no-ae Festival are merely additional descriptions that came to be told under the constraints of the myth of Susanoo-no-Mikoto's debauchery in Takamagahara.
