A knee-length wrap skirt for men. It is the national costume of the Highlands in northern Scotland. It is made of tartan (a multi-colored plaid wool fabric) representing each clan, and is worn by men of the clan and soldiers. Originally, it was a single piece of cloth wrapped around the body and fastened to the waist with a belt, and worn as a knee-length skirt and a top covering the back (breacan-feile), combined with high socks and a sporran (a leather bag). The modern kilt is only the skirt part, fastened with a buckle around the hips. Today, it is known as the clothing of Scottish men and military bands, and is widely worn as a basic skirt for women and children. The word kilt originally came from the Scottish or Saxon word meaning "to shorten" or "to tie around the body."
