A peninsula that juts out to the north and forms the northeastern part of Queensland, Australia. Cape York, at the tip of the peninsula, is the northernmost point of the Australian continent. It faces the Coral Sea to the east and the Gulf of Carpentaria to the west. It stretches about 800 km north to south, and its base stretches about 650 km east to west. Apart from a small area of tropical rainforest on the east coast, there is little vegetation and the population is sparse. With the exception of the area around Cairns in the southeast, there is little economic activity apart from extensive cattle grazing in the south and bauxite mining in Weipa in the north.
