The battle was fought in 1526 when the Ottoman army of Suleiman the Magnificent, who had captured Belgrade in 1521 and pacified the lands south of the Danube and Sava rivers, crossed the Danube and defeated the Hungarian army at Mohács. At the same time in Hungary, the young King Louis II of Poland was struggling to control the nobles, the conflict between Catholics and Lutherans was intensifying, the nobles were oppressing the peasants after the Dozska Rebellion of 1514, and the ambitious nobleman Szapolyaii was aiming for royal power, causing a loss of national unity.
