This refers to the orogenic belt of the Appalachian Mountains in North America. The major crustal movements that occurred here were formerly called the Appalachian Revolution, and were believed to have occurred from the Late Carboniferous to the end of the Permian period, roughly the same time as the Variscan orogeny in Europe. Recent research has shown that geosynclinal deposition in the Appalachian orogen spanned the Late Proterozoic to the Devonian periods of the Paleozoic, and that the granite that intruded into these sedimentary rocks formed four times: (1) the latest Proterozoic to Cambrian, (2) the Ordovician to Silurian, (3) the Devonian, and (4) the Pennsylvanian (Late Carboniferous), each of which was accompanied by metamorphism.
