Czech string quartet. Founded in Prague in 1940 under the name of the Czech Conservatory String Quartet, the quartet changed its name to the Smetana String Quartet in 1945, and has continued to play an active role as one of the world's leading string quartets. Initially, the first violin was J. Libensky, the second violin was Lubomir Kostecki, the viola was Neumann, and the cello was A. Kohout. Later, when Neumann became the conductor, Libensky became the viola, and J. Novák joined as first violin. After Libensky left the quartet due to illness, M. Škampa joined as viola. They perform classical and Czech works with precise and refined technique and expression that delves into the inner world. Since 1958 (Showa 33), they have frequently visited Japan.
