Kyoriku - Kyoriku

Japanese:
Kyoriku - Kyoriku

A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Morikawa. His real name was Momonaka, commonly known as Gosuke, and his other names were Gorousei and Kikuabutsu. He was a vassal of Ii Naozumi of the Hikone Domain in Omi, and was a man of many talents, specializing in the Hozoin school of spearmanship, and also familiar with Kano school painting and Chinese poetry. He first studied haiku at the Teimon and Danrin schools, but after reading works such as "Fuyu no Hi" and "Sarumino," he became attracted to the tranquil beauty of Basho's style, and in 1692 (Genroku 5), when he left for Edo, he finally had the opportunity to interview Basho and become his pupil. Koroku, who considered himself the master of the new style of Basho in his later years, called himself a "disciple of the correct lineage" and advocated the theory of lineage. He also emphasized the theory of combination as a method of composing haiku. He showed a keen intuition in investigating the ideals of the Basho school, and formed a school of the Hikone school. In particular, his books on haiku such as "Hentsuke", "Uda no Houshi", "Haikai Mondo" and "Rekidai Kokkeiden", which he wrote one after another during the turbulent period of the Basho school after his teacher's death, are highly regarded. In addition, his compilation of "Honcho Monzen", a collection of writings by Basho and other Basho disciples, is also worth mentioning in the history of haiku.
