Supply curve

Japanese: 供給曲線 - きょうきゅうきょくせん（英語表記）supply curve

A diagram showing the relationship between the price of a good and its supply volume. This relationship between supply volume and price expressed as an equation is called a supply function. In a temporary period, the supply curve is shown as a vertical line that is in fact unrelated to price. In contrast, if each company pursues the principle of profit maximization, the short-term supply curve will coincide with the marginal cost curve. Furthermore, the long-term supply curve, which takes into account technological innovation and changes in fixed equipment, will be the envelope of the short-term supply curve. Generally, marginal cost declines until the supply volume reaches a certain point, but then rises, so the supply curve is drawn sloping upward to the right in a graph with price on the vertical axis.

財の価格とその供給量の関係を図示したもの。この供給量と価格との関係を式に表わしたものを供給関数という。一時的な期間では事実上供給曲線は価格とは無関係な垂直線で示される。これに対して短期の供給曲線は各企業が利潤極大化原理を追求するならば，限界費用曲線と一致する。また技術革新や固定設備の変化をも考慮にいれた長期の供給曲線は，短期の供給曲線の包絡線となる。一般に限界費用は供給量がある点に達するまでは低下するが以後は上昇するため，供給曲線は価格を縦軸とした図において右上がりに描かれる。
