…This method was revolutionary for its time, and in that sense it left a huge mark on the academic world of British legal history, as well as exerting a great influence on related fields such as social and economic history. He wrote many books based on this method, but his main work, History of English Law before the Time of Edward I (2 volumes, 1895), is a compilation of the results of 19th century European and American historiography, which he used to explore the origins of English law using the above methodology, and is famous as a classic not only in legal history but also in British history. Although the book was co-written with F. Pollock, most of it was written by Maitland. …
