A novel by American novelist Upton Sinclair. Published in 1906. Set in a Chicago cannery, it depicts the lives of oppressed workers toiling in horrific conditions where rats swarm and tuberculosis patients spit phlegm. It exposes the contradictions hidden behind the development of American capitalism and is considered the greatest proletarian novel in America. It caused a great stir, but ironically it aroused public opinion about meat hygiene rather than the plight of the workers, and was instrumental in the enactment of the Pure Food and Drug Act.
