A representative painter of the Netherlands (Northern Netherlands) in the second half of the 15th century, active in Haarlem. According to van Mander's Book of Painters (1604), he studied under A. van Ouwater, the founder of the Haarlem school of painting, and worked as an assistant at the monastery of the Knights of St. John (Sint-Jans) before dying at the age of 28, but his birth and death years and other details of his life are unknown. His landscape depictions had a great influence on the next generation of Northern painters. His most famous work is The Burning of the Remains of St. John (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), which can be seen as the starting point of group portraiture, a style that developed uniquely in the Netherlands.

ハールレムで活動した15世紀後半のオランダ(北ネーデルラント)の代表的画家。ファン･マンデルの《画家の書》(1604)によれば，ハールレム画派の始祖ファン･アウワーテルA.van Ouwaterに学び，助修士として聖ヨハネ(シント･ヤンス)騎士団の修道院で活動し28歳で夭折したとされているが，生没年や生涯の詳細は不明。その風景描写は次代の北方画家たちに大きな影響を及ぼした。オランダで特異な発展を遂げる集団肖像画の出発点ともみなせる《聖ヨハネの遺骨の焼却》(ウィーン美術史美術館)が代表作。
