An American film produced in 1922. Directed by Robert Flaherty. A groundbreaking masterpiece that was the first in the history of cinema to be labeled a "documentary film." The person who coined the term was John Grierson, the British-Canadian father and theorist of documentary, who defined documentary as "film that creatively processes real events." In fact, this was the first film to prove Grierson's theory that stories born on location are truer than those written in a script, and that natural people give truer performances than actors.
