...It began with G. Wenker (1852-1911) of Germany and was established by J. Gillieron of France. This is symbolized by the 35 volumes and supplements of the Atlas linguistique de la France (1902-09, 14, 20), co-authored by Gillieron and his assistant E. Edmont (1854-1926). What linguistic geography has revealed is that "words have their own history," and that although it is possible to draw boundaries (isoglosses) between words, it is not possible to draw boundaries between languages.

…In 1883, he succeeded A. Darmesteter as head of the Romance languages and dialectology course at his alma mater, and remained so until his death. From 1897, for four years, he had his assistant E. Edmont (1854-1926, coincidentally born and died in the same year as Gilliéron) conduct on-site interview surveys of certain research topics at 638 locations throughout France and in the surrounding French-speaking regions, and published the results in a linguistic atlas of 1946 pages (including Corsica). …
