Hero of Greek mythology. Son of Alcaeus. He was engaged to Alcmene, the daughter of his uncle Electryon, who succeeded his father as king of Mycenae, but one day he accidentally killed Electryon and fled to Thebes to live with King Creon, taking Alcmene with him. As a condition for their marriage, Alcmene demanded that he defeat King Pterelaus, who had been the enemy of her brother. While he was away on a campaign, Alcmene had a relationship with Zeus, who had deceived her in the guise of Amphitryon, and then married him when he returned in triumph. Alcmene is said to have given birth to twins, Iphicles, who was his son, and Hercules, the son of Zeus.
