Bronchography

Japanese: 気管支造影 - きかんしぞうえい（英語表記）bronchography

A contrast agent is injected into the bronchi to create an X-ray. In a normal chest X-ray, the bronchi do not show up clearly. However, using this method, the bronchi can be clearly visualized. The contrast agent used should have a high X-ray absorption rate, adhere to the bronchial mucosa but not be absorbed, and be quickly excreted as phlegm after imaging. Water-soluble contrast agents were generally used. However, the contrast agent was later discontinued, and now CT scans can be used to visualize lesions in the chest, including the lungs, in detail, so bronchography is rarely performed anymore.

気管支の中に造影剤を流し込んでX線造影を行うこと。ふつうの胸部X線写真では，気管支は明りょうに写らない。しかし，この方法を用いると，気管支を明確に造影することができる。使用造影剤は，X線吸収度が大きく，気管支粘膜に密着するが，吸収されず，造影後は速やかに痰として排出可能な物質がよく，一般には水溶性造影剤が用いられた。しかし，その後，造影剤が発売中止となったうえ，現在ではCTスキャン法により，肺を含め，胸部の病変が詳細に描出されるため，この気管支造影法はほとんど行われなくなった。
