In Greek mythology, a statue of Athena is said to have been at Troy. It was said to have been sent down from heaven by Zeus for Dardanus, the founder of the city, and Troy was impregnable as long as it was there. When Odysseus learned of this, he sneaked into the city with Diomedes and stole it, enabling the Greek army to capture Troy. However, Roman legend has it that the statue stolen at this time was actually a fake, and that the real Palladion was taken by Aeneas at the time of the fall of Troy and brought to Italy, where it was eventually placed in the Temple of Vesta in Rome, becoming a sacred guarantee of its safety. One version attempts to resolve the contradiction between the two versions by having Diomedes bring the Palladion to Italy and give it to Ajax.
