A holy place for Hindus in the western end of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is located on the right bank of the Yamuna (Jamuna) River along National Highway 3, about 130 km south of the capital Delhi. It has a population of 37,000 (1981). It is famous for the legend that Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the guardian deity of the three major gods of Hinduism, appeared here and bestowed many virtues on the people. There are countless temples, large and small, built in the town. The largest of these is Gobind Deo, which is said to have been built by Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century to pray for the glory of Hinduism.
