It is found in the high mountains from central Honshu northward and in Mount Tsurugi in Shikoku. It reproduces vegetatively via underground stems. The stem is about 30 cm tall. The spatula-shaped basal leaves are well developed and remain persistent even when in flower. The stem leaves are small and few, and the base slightly embraces the stem. The stems and leaves have long, spreading, dirty brown coarse hairs and short glandular hairs, and it resembles Kozolina, but is a different genus. When cut, it exudes a white milky juice. In July and August, several yellow flower heads grow at the end of the stem.
