Co-insurance - Kyodo Hoken

An insurance contract method in which multiple insurers jointly indemnify the insured's risk. In this method, each insurer usually decides on the percentage of liability to be borne by him/herself and is responsible for indemnifying only up to that percentage for any losses that occur. Coinsurance, like reinsurance, is a method of distributing risk among multiple insurers. However, while reinsurance distributes risk vertically, coinsurance distributes it horizontally. In addition, in terms of the relationship with the insurer, with reinsurance, only one insurer (the direct insurer) has a direct relationship with the insurer and the other insurers (the reinsurers) are in the background, whereas with coinsurance, all insurers have a direct relationship with the insurer and exist side by side.

In the case of a joint insurance contract, a lead company is usually appointed, which represents each of the contributing insurance companies and negotiates with the policyholder and handles administrative procedures. The Lloyd's Insurance Company in the UK is famous for its unique structure, but it is based on the joint insurance system.

複数の保険者が保険加入者の危険を共同して填補(てんぽ)責任を負う保険契約方式。この方式では、個々の共同保険者は自己の負担すべき責任の割合を決め、発生した損害に対して、その割合を限度としてだけ填補責任を負うのが通常である。共同保険は再保険と同様に多数の保険者の間で危険を分散する方法である。ただし再保険が危険の縦の分散であるのに対し、共同保険は横の分散である。また対加入者関係において、再保険が、1人の保険者（元受保険者）のみが加入者と直接関係にたち、他の保険者（再保険者）は背後に位置するのに対して、共同保険では、すべての保険者が加入者に対して直接の関係にたち、かつ併立するのである。

　共同保険契約の場合には通常、幹事会社を定め、この幹事会社は各分担保険会社を代表して、契約者との折衝および事務手続を行う。イギリスのロイズ保険組合は独特な機構をもつものとして有名であるが、共同保険の方式が根底にある。
