Heat haze - Mayfly

Japanese: 陽炎 - かげろう
Heat haze - Mayfly
〘Noun〙① A phenomenon in which light and shadow show a subtle flicker. When strong direct sunlight heats the ground, the air close to the ground becomes warm and creates unevenness in the density distribution, causing the light passing through to be refracted irregularly and appear to flicker. It particularly refers to the phenomenon seen in fields on sunny spring days. In waka poetry from the Heian period onwards, it is often used as an analogy for things that seem barely there, things that are incoherent, and things that are visible but have no substance. It is also sometimes confused with "kagerou (mayfly) (1)②" and used as an analogy for something fleeting. Kagiroi. Kageroi. 《Season: Spring》※Hankojo Utaawase (around 893) "When the summer moonlight shines generously, a shadow appears on the flowing water."※Haiku poem, Sarumino (1691) 4 "A fox playing with wild horses (shadows) with its young (Boncho) "② A type of grass. A misunderstanding of ①. [Yakumo Gosho (around 1242)] [Additional notes] There is also a theory that ① is interpreted from the Chinese word "yuito" to mean a certain type of spider's young that spins threads and floats in the sky on the wind on a clear day in mid-late autumn or early spring.

Kagiroi Kagirohi [heat haze]

[Season: Spring] *Kojiki (712), Vol. 2, Folk Song: "When I stand on Hanifuzaka Hill and look , I see the burning houses of Kagirohi , around my wife's house." ② The sky that appears reddish at dawn around sunrise . *Man'yoshu (late 8th century), 1.48: "I see flames rising in the eastern fields, and when I look back, the moon is burning." ③ The sky that appears dyed red by flames or other things. [Additional notes] In later times, it came to mean exclusively ①.

Kagiro/ Ukagirofu [heat haze]

〘Self-consciousness Ha-shi〙 Shines red and paints the sky. Also, light and shadow appear to flicker. ※First High School dormitory song, The Color of Spring Flowers (1901) by Kanji Yano "The autumn leaves in the evening are hazy, and the shadows of the setting sun are the color of blood, fading away near the edge of the mountain."
