They live in a wide area from central-western Ethiopia (Shoa, Walaga), central-eastern Ethiopia (Harar), and southern Ethiopia (Arsi, Bale, Sidamo), to northern Kenya (Marsabit) and eastern Kenya (Tana River Basin). They are also called the Galla. Their language belongs to the lowland Eastern Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family, and they all speak the same language, Galinya. Their estimated population is 8 to 10 million. They are divided into Macha, Turama, Wollo, Eastern Galla (Itu Kottu), Arsi, Guji, Borana, Gabra, Olmo, etc.

エチオピア中西部(ショア，ワラガ地方)，中東部(ハラール地方)および南部(アルシ，バレ，シダモ地方)からケニア北部(マルサビット地方)，東部(タナ川流域)にわたる広い地域に住む。ガラGalla族とも呼ばれる。その言語は，アフロ･アジア語族の低地東クシ系に属し，いずれも同一の言語ガリニヤを話す。推定人口800万～1000万。細かくは，マチャ，トゥラマ，ウォロ，東部ガラ(イトゥ･コットゥ)，アルシ，グジ，ボラナ，ガブラ，オルモ等に分かれる。
