A village in Minamiazumi District, central-western Nagano Prefecture. The local mnemonic is "Azumi." Population 2,893 (1995). Located west of Matsumoto City, in the middle and upper reaches of the Azusa River. Located in the Hida Mountains, most of the village area is covered by forests and wilderness, and more than half of it is designated as Chubu Sangaku National Park. The villages are scattered along the Azusa River and the Norikura Plateau, and are connected by National Route 158 and other routes. During the Edo period, the islands and other villages made their living from lumbering and charcoal production in the Matsumoto Domain's forests, but after the Taisho period, power plants were built in various places in the village, and the number of people working at the plants increased.
