A shrub of the Epacris family similar to the Ericaceae family (illustration). The anthers are one-lobed and split vertically, unlike Ericaceae, which have two lobes and many with an opening at the tip. The leaves are alternate, leathery, and lack serrations. The flowers form racemes or grow singly at the sides of leaves, with persistent bracts and a calyx with 4-5 lobes. The corolla is tubular, actinosymmetrical, with 4-5 lobes at the tip. There are 4-5 stamens. The ovary is divided into 4-5 lobes at the top. The fruit is a globular capsule with 5 lobes that produces many seeds. About 40 species are known in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
