The Mikohidari lineage is descended from the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. In the mid-Kamakura period, Mikohidari Tamenori was born as the second son of Tameie. He inherited his grandfather Fujiwara Teika's Ichijo-Kyogoku residence and took the family name Kyogoku. Tamenori excelled in waka poetry and taught it to his son, Kyogoku Tamekane (1254-1332). Later, Tamekane became the head of the household of Saionji Sanekane, and through this connection he became a leader in the waka world centered around Emperor Fushimi and Eifukumon'in, and participated in the compilation of the imperially commissioned Gyokuyo Wakashu. Tamekane, who based his innovative theory on waka poetry, came into conflict with the head of the family, Nijō Tameyo, who advocated a gentle and traditional waka style, and the compilation of the book was temporarily suspended, but Tamekane's arguments were ultimately accepted and the book was completed. However, Tamekane had no biological children, and the family line was cut off shortly after his death.
