...the maintenance of a species by leaving offspring. In both Japanese and English, the distinction between "reproduction" and "multiplication (or proliferation, propagation)" is unclear, and they are often used interchangeably, so a conceptual clarification is necessary. In order for a species to be maintained, one generation must give rise to the next generation, and the next generation must give rise to the next generation.
