...The name of the four major classes in Indian society. It is translated as surname. Varna originally meant "color," but when the Aryans entered India, the color of skin indicated the difference between rulers and the ruled, so the meaning of "class" was added, and it later came to be used to mean "class." According to Indian classics such as the Manu scriptures, the duties of each Varna are set out as follows: (1) Brahmin: Performing rituals for others, teaching the Vedic scriptures, accepting alms.
