Born on May 17th, 22nd year of the reign of King Myeongjong. Passed the civil service examination in 1593. He was captured during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's second invasion of Korea (the Keicho War) and imprisoned in Kyoto. Under the protection of Akamatsu Hiromichi, lord of Tatsuno Castle in Harima (Hyogo Prefecture), he became acquainted with Fujiwara Seika and taught him Neo-Confucianism. Released in 1600, he returned to Japan. His main work, Suinshu, contains the section Kanyouroku, which describes the state of affairs in Japan and his own life as a prisoner of war.
