Jiang Yan - Kyou

Japanese: 姜沆 - きょうこう

1567-1618 An official of the Joseon Dynasty.
Born on May 17th, 22nd year of the reign of King Myeongjong. Passed the civil service examination in 1593. He was captured during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's second invasion of Korea (the Keicho War) and imprisoned in Kyoto. Under the protection of Akamatsu Hiromichi, lord of Tatsuno Castle in Harima (Hyogo Prefecture), he became acquainted with Fujiwara Seika and taught him Neo-Confucianism. Released in 1600, he returned to Japan. His main work, Suinshu, contains the section Kanyouroku, which describes the state of affairs in Japan and his own life as a prisoner of war. He died on May 6th, 10th year of the reign of Gwanghaegun. He was 52 years old. His pen name was Suin.

明宗22年5月17日生まれ。1593年科挙に合格。豊臣秀吉の第2次朝鮮出兵(慶長の役)で捕虜となり,京都に幽閉される。播磨(はりま)(兵庫県)竜野城主赤松広通の保護下に藤原惺窩(せいか)とまじわり,朱子学をつたえた。慶長5年(1600)釈放され,帰国。主著「睡隠集」の中に日本の内情や自身の捕虜生活をしるした「看羊録」がおさめられている。光海君10年5月6日死去。52歳。号は睡隠。
