A general term for the three imperially commissioned waka anthologies: Kokin Wakashu, Gosen Wakashu, and Shui Wakashu. The "three generations" refers to the three generations of Emperor Daigo, Murakami, and Kazan. According to Fujiwara no Kiyosuke's Fukuro Soshi, before the compilation of Shuishu, the term included the Manyoshu as well. The name already appears in Minamoto no Toshiyori's Toshiyori Zuiunou, so it is believed to have been in common use by the late Heian period.
