Kisarazu [city] - Kisarazu

Japanese: 木更津[市] - きさらづ
Kisarazu [city] - Kisarazu
A city on the Tokyo Bay coast in central Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. It occupies the lower reaches of the Obitsu River. The central city has been a port town since the Middle Ages, and prospered due to the traffic of Kisarazu ships, which monopolized the transportation of tribute rice from Boso in the early modern period. After the establishment of the Naval Air Corps in 1936, it developed as a military city, and after World War II, a Self-Defense Force base was established here. In recent years, the development of reclaimed industrial land including Kisarazu Port has progressed, and factories producing electrical equipment, steel, etc. have been established, forming part of the Keiyo Industrial Area. The Uchibo Line, Kururi Line, Tateyama Expressway, and Ken-O Expressway pass through the city. With the progress of industrialization, Kisarazu Port was designated an important port in 1968, and in December 1997, the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (15.1 km) was opened between the port and Kawasaki, a car-only road. There are Shosei-ji Temple, famous for Tanuki-bayashi (raccoon dog music), and the Kinreizuka Tomb. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 138.95 km2 . The population was 129,312 (2010).
