Belgian cartographer. Born in Antwerp, he spent his entire life there. He traveled to England, France, and Italy, and was friends with geographers such as Mercator. His first cartographic achievement was the production of an eight-sheet world atlas in 1564, followed by a two-sheet map of Egypt in 1565 and a map of Asia in 1567. He collected many maps, standardized their presentation, and compiled them into the famous Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ), the first complete atlas in Europe. The first edition was dated May 20, 1570, and was a 53-page atlas with 70 maps, but due to high demand it was reprinted twice. The 1595 edition included a map of Japan, the first standalone map of Japan in Europe.
